How To Take A Bouquet Of Grocery Store Flowers & Make Multiple Arrangements

One tip that I gave to my husband, years ago, when he wants to buy me flowers is to get the flowers that are in a bag, not the pretty ones in a vase. Though the beautiful flowers in a vase are so alluring because they are all put together and ready to gift give, they can be pretty pricey. They are not the most budget friendly. Nor do they allow for you to be creative. Plus instead of one big arrangement already put together, you can make multiple arrangements to spread around your home...I’ll show you. Also, the benefit alone in creating with flowers is an inexpensive therapeutic process that I know you would enjoy. Who doesn’t love flowers! Here I’ll show you how I make multiple arrangements along with some flower tips.

We just recently celebrated Valentine's Day 2020 in which my husband, Aaron, surprised me with a beautiful color palette of flowers in a bag. He has learned me well through the years. Not only is it so thoughtful and day brightening when flowers are involved but when the flowers coordinate with our home plus the colors that I’m drawn to in a particular season, is even better! Flowers can brighten anyones day and can create lots of enjoyment and joy!

I wish I would have taken a picture of the bouquet in the bag before I got started but you know exactly the ones that I’m referring too. The bouquets are a mixture of flowers and usually have some pops of color, as well as some greenery stems and some baby’s breath. My arrangement had beautiful creamy ivory roses mixed with peach ones, some mum like flowers, green stems and some type of purple looking baby’s breath. Why purple? Probably for that pop of color but everything can be used in the arrangement and nothing is wasted, it just doesn’t have to be all together. That delicate little pretty pop of purple can go into a beaker glass and sit pretty on the window sill in my laundry room. Just be creative. That’s the beauty of making your own arrangements, you get to be the creator. So let’s dive in to the steps….

The first thing that I do is separate the flowers from the arrangement into groupings of each flower. Then I can get an idea of the size of each flower and quantity so I have some idea how I want to display them. Next, is the fun part of looking around my home to see what containers that I could use. This allows me to get very creative because these containers will work great for fresh cut flowers unlike how they will not work for my plants so I’m able to step out of the box a little further.

The larger container that I was drawn to was this one from Magnolia, which is actually a canister that comes with a lid and was in my kitchen. Plus after grabbing it, it wildly was able to fit one of my larger vintage flower frogs on top. Have you used a flower frog before?! They are my favorite, well one of my favorites that I collect. I collect the vintage glass ones that come in all different sizes and I also collect the metal green ones that are different looking from the glass ones. I have sold the vintage glass flower frogs in my pop up shop that is here on the website. Yes, I actually do not keep them all! Plus, I will have some at my next pop up so keep a watch for that. I do love “hunting” for vintage finds and passing them on to you as well!! You can see from the photos below how thick the flower frogs can be. You can even use these on your desk for a pretty way of holding your pens and pencils. A great way to repurpose an item for sure! It’s all about thinking out of the box and getting creative when it comes to vintage! That’s one of the reasons why I love vintage so much, plus of the story it can tell. So back to my steps……

After I gather all my vessels or containers, now I know what size that I need to cut the stems of the flowers. It is recommended to hold the bottom of each flower stalk under running water while you trim at a 45 degree angle using pruners or sharp scissors. Its also best to make sure your containers are well cleaned to extend the life of the flowers. You also want to remove wilted or wet leaves. I usually take all the leaves off. Then I start placing the flowers in the container through the flower frog. I then clean up any of the wilted rose petals that have brown edges which really makes a difference.
